Be Well to Excel is an after-school boxing and wellness program launching this fall for Montgomery County youth, ages 13-17.

What is
Be Well to Excel?

Be Well to Excel is an after-school wellness program for Montgomery County youth hosted by Donte's Boxing and Wellness Foundation. The program has 3 focus areas:

  • Athletic Training
  • Boxing Technique & Conditioning
  • Personal Development

By attending this program students will have mastered basic boxing fundamentals, improved their physical fitness levels, and achieved personal development milestones to positively impact their everyday lives.

What does the program cost?

This program is free and all equipment is provided. However, you must apply and be admitted.

Who can apply?

  • Montgomery County youth ages 13-17
  • You must meet the age requirement by your program start date.

We will be prioritizing applications from students that meet the following criteria:

  • Primary residence is in one of the following zip codes: 20910, 20860, 20912, 20877, 20842*
  • Enrolled at Gaithersburg High School for the 2024-2025 school year

Students that fall outside of these priority groups can still apply.

*We may ask for proof of residency and/or school enrollment.

Program Dates

CLOSED - Session I: September 24-October 31

Group A: Tuesday/Thursday 4-5pm

Group B: Tuesday/Thursday 5:30-6:30pm

CLOSED - Session II: November 4-December 19
No classes Nov. 25-28 (Thanksgiving)

Group C: Tuesday/Thursday 4-5pm

Group D: Tuesday/Thursday 5:30-6:30pm

Group E: Monday/Wednesday 4-5pm

Group F: Monday/Wednesday 5:30pm

Admitted students will be assigned to one of the groups above. They will be able to rank their first and second group choices when applying.

Classes will take place at Donte's Boxing Gym in Derwood, MD.

Common Questions

Do I need experience?

No. Zero experience is required.

What do I need for class?

We provide all equipment for class. However, we suggest bringing water or a sports drink.

What should I wear?

You should wear athletic clothes and shoes you can move in comfortably. Think of what you'd typically wear for a P.E. class or sports practice.

Does the facility have locker rooms?

No. The facility does not have locker rooms. We recommend changing prior to arrival. However, there is a single-occupancy bathroom available.

Where are classes held?

Classes are held at Donte's Boxing Gym in Derwood, MD. The gym is located off 355 (Rockville Pike/Frederick Rd.) & Redland Road, across from the King Farm neighborhood.

Is transportation provided?

No. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from classes. However, the gym is just steps from the Shady Grove Metro Station, as well as public and MCPS bus stops. Please consult the county transit and MCPS's transportation websites to plan your travel.

How much does it cost?

Be Well to Excel is offered free of cost to students. However, you must apply, interview, and be selected for the program.

What are the rules?

There are three agreements:

  • Students can't miss more than 3 classes
  • Student can't be tardy (15 min. or later) more than 3 times
  • Respect fellow students, instructors, and staff at ALL times. There is ZERO tolerance for disrespect or disruption.


Anyone that breaks these rules will be dismissed from the program.
